Mass Settings are texts of the Catholic Mass set to music. Traditionally, mass settings are the Mass Ordinary (or the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and the Agnus Dei) set to music. In the modern era, mass settings typically include sung versions of the Penitential Act (Kyrie), Gloria, Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia/Lenten Acclamation), Sanctus (Holy), Memorial Acclamations, Great Amen, and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).
Selecting the right mass setting is one of the most important jobs of a music director or ministry leader. While the hymns and/or songs change every week, the selected mass setting(s) often remains constant week after week. Therefore, picking the right setting is a crucial choice.
Our data collection shows that there are over 500 mass settings! RC Liturgy and Service Music has organized these settings by style and genre. It is now easier than ever to discover new settings and select the best one for your community’s worship at the Holy Mass. You can also explore settings for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, or take a trip down memory lane with our From The Archives: Unrevised Settings section.
